Asda Longwell Green evacuated as man 'runs around store with a knife'

Shoppers at one of Bristol's largest supermarkets had to be evacuated from the store this morning after reports that a man began threatening staff with a knife.

Police rushed to the Asda store at Longwell Green at around 10am, as shoppers and staff left the store. One eyewitness posted on social media: "Avoid Asda Longwell Green at the moment. Someone running around with a knife and the store has been evacuated."

Police attended and managed to calm the man and he was also cared for by ambulance crews who arrived soon after.

One woman who was in the store at the time says that there was 'confusion' as the tannoy asking people to evacuate was quiet and the announcement was only made once.

Nikki, 30, said: "I was in the pharmacy just collecting a prescription and a very, very quiet tannoy went out to say, 'evacuate, leave your shopping and just leave'. And that was it, it wasn't repeated, there was no urgency or anything."

A police spokesperson confirmed they resolved the situation with no one getting injured.

"We were called to the Asda, in Craven Way, Longwell Green, at 10am this morning (Wednesday 8 June) following reports of a man with a knife," she said.

"The supermarket was evacuated while officers spoke to the man. He has now been detained awaiting the ambulance service following concerns for his welfare. No one has been injured and officers believe this to be an isolated incident and the store has now reopened," she added.

A spokesperson for Asda said: "Our Longwell Green store was closed for a short time this morning following a police incident. We would like to thank our colleagues and Avon and Somerset Police for their swift responses and can confirm that the store is open again as usual."
