Asda introduces major change to Just Essentials range which affects every shopper

Supermarket giant Asda has had to limit the number of items shoppers can buy from its new Just Essentials budget brand, to stop customers clearing the shelves.

Bargain-hunters can now buy no more than three of the same item from the new range, and the rule is for both online and in store. The limit is per item, so there is no limit on the overall number of items you can buy from the range.

An Asda spokesperson explained that the range, which was launched in May, has proved really popular with customers and the grocery chain wanted to make sure as many people as possible can continue to buy the products in reasonable quantities while Asda worked hard to get the out of stock products back on to the shelves as quickly as possible.

“Just Essentials is proving really popular at the moment and we’re working hard to get the out of stock products back on the shelves as quickly as we can," said a spokesperson. "To make sure as many customers as possible can buy these products we are temporarily limiting purchases to a maximum of three of each product. This will be for a short period and we will let you know as soon these limits are removed. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.”

Since the range of 200 essential products in distinctive yellow packaging was launched, it has featured heavily on social media with many bloggers and influencers publicising the inexpensive meals they have made using the range, although there have been reports of shoppers struggling to get their hands on the items.

However some customers have criticised the design and colour of the range, which replaced its Smart Price range, claiming the packaging is ‘poor shaming’. Some said that the bright yellow colour stands out too much, although Asda retorted that didn't know why people would be ashamed of saving money.
