Asda has launched a new website where you can buy £30 food boxes

Supermarket chain Asda has launched a dedicated website for its food boxes to make sure the elderly and vulnerable shoppers have access to essentials.

The retailer's separate online platform, foodboxes.asda.com, has been created in partnership with e-commerce company StarStock which promises to deliver in two days.

This means Asda's already overstretched online delivery service will remain unaffected.

Asda’s new “cupboard filler” food boxes contain 31 essential items which have been hard to get hold of during the coronavius lockdown like bread, pasta, long life milk and tinned food.

However, the items in each box can vary depending on stock and supply.

Priced at £30 each, including delivery, the boxes are specially designed to help vulnerable people who aren't able to get to a supermarket during the crisis.

Asda’s managing director of sourcing and procurement Mike Snell said: “For vulnerable people across the country, staying at home and not being able to make a trip to the supermarket is a difficult prospect.

“At Asda, we’re committed to helping ease the strain on our customers during this time and hope that by offering our food box at an affordable price, we can help to make lives that little bit easier, giving people peace of mind that their cupboards will be well stocked without the stress.”

Retailers including Morrisons, M&S, Aldi and Home Bargains have already launched their own food boxes containing essential items.

Asda's £30 food box is cheaper than Morrisons' version - which costs £35 and contain 20 items.

While M&S' food box is also priced at £35 but contains 20 products and Home Bargains sells an ' Essential Food Box ' for £23.99 that contains 25 items.

Asda hasn't shared a list of exactly which items are in its food box, but promises that the contents will add up to the price of each one so you won't be charged more compared to buying them separately.

The supermarket's food boxes are available to order online at foodboxes.asda.com for £30 each.
