Asda give refund after self isolating family's £400 big shop crashes to floor outside their home

Asda has apologised to a family who are self-isolating after CCTV footage captured the moment their big shop collapsed to the ground before it was delivered.

The video showed the moment items from a £400 Asda shop were sent crashing to the ground during a delivery drop-off.

David Dawbre from Fairfield was initially refused a refund after witnessing his shopping tumble to the floor outside his home on Monday, May 21.

The scenes were caught on the family's CCTV cameras, and have prompted an apology and full refund from the supermarket chain after they were shown the footage by the ECHO.

Supermarket delivery drivers have been on the frontline of the coronavirus crisis, with pressures on them mounting as delivery slots have been booked up weeks in advance.

But David, 35, said over £80 worth of items had to be thrown away from his monthly food shop, as a result of them being broken or having rolled across the pavement, underneath the van and into a nearby bush.

David is currently self-isolating at home with his family and cannot leave the house, due to one family member being in the high risk category for coronavirus.

He claims the incident started on Monday, after the delivery driver phoned to ask who would be coming to collect the shopping from the van.

David told the ECHO: "Before the shopping arrived the driver rang my wife and said 'who's coming getting this off the van with me, there's about 12 or 13 crates here?'

"She explained that we couldn't because we are self-isolating and that it usually gets dropped off at the doorstep and then we load the shopping into our own bags and they take the crates away.

"We do all of our shopping for the month in one shop because we can't leave the house at the moment."

David added: "He started unloading our shopping and he stacked at least six crates on top of each other.

"As he started to tip the trolley backwards the crates fell all over the road and some of it ended up underneath his van."

In the video, the crates of shopping can be seen tumbling to the floor, leaving items strewn across the street and in a nearby bush.

The driver puts his hands on his head in the footage, as he stands looking at the fallen items, before taking his jacket off.

The footage then shows the driver gathering up the items and putting them back into the crates.

After transporting some of the shopping to the driveway, the driver can then be seen reaching underneath his van for the remaining items.

David said: "People walk their dogs down the street, there's dog poo and drains and rats at night, it could have risked an infection."

David said over £80 worth of items were broken or damaged as a result of what happened, including cleaning products which had burst.

After ringing Asda on Monday to explain what happened, David said he was told to dispose of any broken items and any that had fallen on the pavement and to request a refund.

However, he said he then received an email to say that the refund had been rejected and the matter needed to be investigated further.

David added: "They said if I don't hear back in a week to ring them back and find out what is going on.

"That's not customer care. I've lost over £80 worth of shopping which we've had to re-order - from Tesco.

"I want to highlight what's happened because I don't want the same thing to happen to anyone else."

An Asda spokesperson said: ‘’’We always want to provide the best possible service for our customers and we apologise to Mr Dawbre for not meeting the high standards expected from us on this occasion, we are investigating this further but are pleased that a full refund has been processed.’’
