Asda customers applaud romantic £1 gift perfect for those 'strapped for cash'

One Asda customer spotted a bargain romantic gift in their local supermarket, and it has provoked a range of responses online.

The budget retailer is currently selling engagement rings for only £1, complete with a red heart-shaped box.

The items appear to mimic more traditional rings, with what looks like a silver band and a faux-jewel at its centre.

The Asda shopper believed the product was a good deal, writing on the Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK Facebook group: "In Asda £1, pretty nice too."

The post attracted considerable attention, with over 1,000 users liking it and more than 2,700 leaving comments — which were decidedly mixed in nature.

Some users were quick to scoff at the idea of a £1 engagement ring, with one writing: "Still a bit pricey".

A second remarked: "Certainly throws the old-school 2-month salary rule out of the window!"

Another joked: "Wow. Nice little POUNDora ring".

"Don’t get any ideas," said a fourth after being tagged by another user.

However, many people applauded the idea of a romantic gift available to those on a smaller budget.

One wrote: "Think this is lovely. There may be people who have no money right now but want to express their love. It shouldn’t be the price that matters."

A second stated: "Awww, this is actually rather nice! People laughing, but these could make a couple really happy, who's strapped for cash".

"The price of the ring doesn't matter when the proposal is made with pure heart and real love," a third posted.

Another shared: "Everyone laughing at this but if you really loved someone it wouldn't matter if they gave you a Haribo ring! Love has no price tag!"

Other Facebook users wrote that the budget ring would be a perfect present for children, if not necessarily adults.

"I think it's cute for the kids," one commented.

A second posted: "Aww I will take my 8 year old son to get one for his girlfriend he proposed in the school playground the other day with a pretzel lol I think she would prefer one of these lol."

Another shared: "My 7yo son wants to get his girlfriend one.. anybody know if there's tiny sizes? Hahaha".
