Asda Cookstown’s sister act goes back 23 years

Ever think it might be your dream job, or your worst nightmare, to work alongside your siblings?

Better yet, what about working alongside two or three of them for almost 20 years.

That’s the case of the Kelly sisters in Asda Cookstown, where Mary Jo first joined the supermarket chain 23 years ago.

She was soon followed by sisters Michelle and Paulette, while brother Gary also worked at the store where he met his future wife Ciara.

“It’s nice working alongside my sisters and we do get on, well most of the time!” says Paulette, who works in admin at Asda Cookstown.

“Although we work in different departments, we do see each other regularly throughout the day.

“It’s a real family-oriented store and our team get on really well with each other.

“Mary Jo is only part time now, so I don’t see her that often now, but Michelle and me both live at home so we see each other quite a bit.

“It’s nice at the same time, sometimes you’d like a wee minute or two away from them but you can go and hide in your own department!”

The Kelly family are from outside Pomeroy, and Paulette said the working environment in the store has made it an easy decision to stay for as long as the sisters have.

“Everybody gets on with each other and you would definitely miss the people if you did leave.

“Everybody is related to somebody or they are married to somebody, I have a sister in law that works here too and my younger brother used to work here, so you always see someone you know when you come in.

“There have been plenty of romances and weddings that have come out of here as well!

“There’s even mothers and sons that work here as well, even just people you work with you feel like they are your sisters as well if you’ve been here that long.”

Janice Gibson, Community Champion at Asda Cookstown, said Paulette, Mary Jo and Michelle have made a great addition to the team over the last two decades.

"Paulette, Mary Jo and Michelle are brilliant to work with, they are very friendly, great fun and extremely popular with our colleagues and customers,” Janice said.

“It’s safe to say that working in Asda Cookstown definitely feels like working with family!"
