Asda changes name of its ‘feminine hygiene’ aisle - and shoppers are heaping praise on them

Shoppers are praising supermarket giant Asda after it changed the name of its 'feminine hygiene' aisle.

Now, stores will display signage saying 'period products' instead.

Dropping 'hygiene' from the aisle's name has been praised by shoppers on social media, as it also stops the stigma that periods are unhygienic, MyLondon reports.

The decision to drop the term ‘feminine hygiene’ also hopes to be more inclusive for those who have periods but don’t identify as female.

Some shoppers took to Twitter to share their praise for the supermarket's decision to change the store signs.

One Twitter user shared a picture of the new signage and said: “Massive well done to Asda for changing the language in their stores and taking steps to being more period positive.”

Another user said: “We’re nearly there with accurately named period products at my local.”

A third commented: “Thank you and a massive shout out to @asda for leading the way in changing the language around menstruation.

"#PeriodProducts #MenstrualProducts sanitary hygiene or feminine hygiene suggests menstrual products are for something dirty. Time to change the language.”

One user took to LinkedIn, commenting on their local store saying: “Use language we all understand!

"Goodbye ‘feminine hygiene’; hello ‘period products’. Nice one Asda!”

A spokesperson from Asda commented: "We're proud to have made this change in our stores to better reflect shoppers' attitudes around period products.

"These items are an essential part of the shop for so many, so this change in wording helps us move towards removing the stigma from periods and period products."

Asda also recently announced a reduction in price of the morning after pill in stores and online to just £9.89 to support those who need access to this medication.
