Asda and Tesco ban shoppers without face masks in coronavirus clampdown

Tesco and Asda has joined other supermarket giants in clamping down on face covering rule breakers.

Both firms say they will ban shoppers who refuse to wear one inside their stores, unless they have a medical exemption.

Tesco says that it will bolster its security at the front of supermarkets to help with the enforcement of it’s toughened policy

Adults will also have to shop alone at the giant’s Scots branches, unless they are a carer or with children.

A spokesperson for Tesco said: “We won’t let anyone into stores not wearing a face covering, unless they are exempt.

“We are also asking customers to shop alone, unless they’re a carer or with children… we will have additional security to help manage this.”

Asda says that it will continue to offer customers a face mask if they have forgotten to bring theirs.

But refusal to take up the offer will result in staff refusing entry.

The firm said: “If a customer has forgotten their face covering, we will continue to offer them one free of charge - but should a customer refuse to wear a covering without a valid medical reason and be in any way challenging to our colleagues about doing so - our security colleagues will refuse entry.”

Both companies have now followed competitors Morrisons and Sainsbury’s in introducing similar bans at their Scots supermarkets.

Sainsbury’s also said that it would ‘challenge’ people shopping in large groups, in addition to those not wearing a mask.

It is hoped that the measures will help to curb the spread of coronavirus in the supermarkets as Scotland enters into its second week of stay at home lockdown restrictions.

NHS Test and Trace data from south of the border in November last year revealed that supermarkets were the most common place to catch coronavirus.

The research found that 18.3% of people with Covid-19 caught it while they were out grocery shopping.

It is currently illegal to enter a supermarket without a face covering in Scotland, unless you have a medical exemption.

Scots face a fine of £60 for a first time breach of the rules, which is then doubled on every repeat offence up to a maximum value of £960.

Nicola Sturgeon praised supermarkets for their decision to clamp down on people breaking the law on face coverings.

During the Scottish Government press briefing today, the First Minister said: “I welcome some of the announcements and commitments made by some supermarkets yesterday to make sure that they’re playing their part in helping encourage the use of face coverings.”
