'As well as sadness there is great pride' - Gardai remember tragic Detective Garda Colm Horkan on one year anniversary of his death

An Garda Síochána have issued a statement of remembrance on the first anniversary of the tragic death of Detective Garda Colm Horkan.

“Today is a very sad and difficult day for Colm’s family and friends, his colleagues, the local community, and An Garda Síochána,” the statement reads,

“This day last year, our colleague Detective Garda Colm Horkan went to work for what would tragically be his last tour of duty.”

On June 17 2020, Garda Colm Horkan was fatally shot, metres away from the station where he worked in Castlerea, Co Roscommon.

“Colm was fatally wounded while protecting the community he served,” An Garda Síochána said.

The 49-year-old had served as a garda for 24 years.

His family released a statement and said Colm was a “proud, popular, respected member of An Garda Síochána who loved his job and wore the uniform with great pride,”

“He was kind, thoughtful and a selflessly loyal gentleman to all he encountered both on a personal and professional level. Colm was one of a kind.”

One year on from his tragic death, An Garda Síochána say that “as well as sadness there is great pride,”

The statement reads: “Great pride in Colm as a person who was loved and respected by so many people,

“Great pride in Colm’s community spirit and desire to help and support others…

“Great pride in Colm’s bravery and selflessness to protect the lives of the people he served.”

On Saturday there will be a ceremony in Castlerea in his honour unveiling two plaques. A video of the ceremony will be available on social media afterwards.

“Colm was the epitome of what all of us in An Garda Síochána should aspire to be – professional, hard-working, supportive, community-focused, and brave. Colm will never be forgotten.”
