106,000 Americans told us about their vote. Some trends are emerging

Today's US election comes at the end of a very, very, busy news year.

But as Americans have been weighing up their vote over the past few weeks, what issues have been dominant?

The final votes won't be tallied for days or weeks, but we can look to one expansive survey of the American electorate to offer insights now.

The VoteCast survey of more than 100,000 voters conducted by the University of Chicago for the Associated Press may start to shed some light. The survey of 106,240 voters was conducted for eight days, concluding as polls closed.

Here are some of the preliminary findings.

How demographics split the vote

More men voted for Donald Trump than women, while race also affected decision making.

The main issues

Voters were asked to pick the most important issue facing the country from a list of nine issues.

Top of the list, with 42 per cent of voters naming it as their most important issue, was the coronavirus pandemic.

The only other issue that came close was the economy and jobs, with 27 per cent.

What do they think of Trump?

The survey found that Trump's leadership loomed large in voters' decision making. Nearly two-thirds of voters said their vote was about Trump — either for him or against him.

How does Biden compare to Trump?

Voters were asked to judge the candidates on this categories.

The survey was conducted for seven days, ending as polls close, and the Associated Press uses it to help power race calls on election night.

It combines a random sample of registered voters drawn from state voter files, registered voters contacted from a representative panel of the US population, and voters selected from non-probability online panels.
