As the world turns

Big plot developments in the GOP's soap opera today: First, New Mexico senator Pete Domenici - embroiled in the US attorney scandal and suffering poor health - makes the surprise announcement that he will not seek re-election next year. Dum dum dum!

Then, a judge rules that Idaho senator Larry Craig can't withdraw his guilty plea in connection with his arrest in June after apparently soliciting sex in a Minnesota airport bathroom. (Craig has vowed to remain in office, but he won't if his Republican colleagues have anything to say about it.)

Will the Dems awaken from their coma? Idaho isn't likely to go Democratic in 2008, but the New Mexico race could certainly provide some high drama.
