As Romeo Beckham is pictured with his first 'tattoo' - what should parents and teenagers consider before getting one?

It's no secret that David Beckham is a fan of tattoos, but now pictures have surfaced of his 17-year-old son Romeo apparently sporting his first inking.

If the marking is indeed permanent the teenager will be following in the footsteps of both his famous parents and eldest brother Brooklyn with dad David currently sporting a total of 63 tattoos.

In the UK it is illegal for anyone under the age of 18 to get a tattoo, even with a parent's consent. However in some European countries and most US states the age of consent is 16, but as we navigate our way through a global pandemic when health practices are changing, we ask, what are the dangers, risks and now, Covid-19 procedures surrounding tattoos?

First up, they're pretty permanent.

So your teenager wants a tattoo? Make sure and stress to them that this is a huge decision and something they will likely be stuck with for the rest of their lives.

Laser removal could be an option but it is a long, drawn out and apparently relatively painful process. So, choose well!

Complications

While rare, infections are possible and can turn nasty. Infections can either occur on the skin surface on and. around the tattoo or in the blood.

Choose your tattooist carefully.

Most professional tattooists are reputable but if you are not sure then check with your local authority.

According to the Scottish Government all tattooists  must be licensed and must comply with local byelaws relating to staff hygiene and the safety and cleanliness of premises, furniture and equipment. Your premises could be inspected before you get your licence.

What about Covid-19?

The Scottish Government announced that tattoo parlours could open back up on July 22. While they face implementing similar restrictions to other close contact businesses such as hairdressers and beauty parlours, it is always with checking specifically what your tattooist is going to be doing with regards to coronavirus safety measures.
