AS Roma boss sends warning to Manchester United ahead of Europa League semi-final

AS Roma boss Paulo Fonseca has promised to attack Manchester United when the two sides meet on Thursday.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side welcome the Serie A club to Old Trafford for the first leg of their Europa Lague semi-final tie.

United beat Granada 4-0 across two legs to reach the last four, whilst Roma knocked out Ajax.

Ahead of Thursday's first leg, Fonseca admitted his side can't afford to sit and defend deep against United, despite their quality on the counter-attack.

“This semi-final with Manchester United is very important and I must stay entirely focused on a game that is too important for us," he told Football Italia.

“It’s true that Manchester United are very dangerous on the counter-attack, but we must realise it’ll be really difficult if we go to Manchester and just defend.

“We need to keep the ball and make it difficult for them. The team must show character and not sit too deep.”

Roma prepared for their trip to Old Trafford with a 3-2 defeat to Cagliari on Sunday night, though Fonseca made rested key individuals ahead of Thursday.

United did the same, leaving Edinson Cavani and Paul Pogba on the bench at Elland Road as they drew 0-0 on their first visit since 2011.

Roma are seventh in the Serie A table and haven't won a match since April 11.
