As Papiss Cisse is linked to NUFC return - fans reminisce about who they'd like to see back

Newcastle United fans were left bemused with a report claiming former number nine Papiss Cisse had been offered to the club in a January transfer window return.

The 34-year-old has netted nine goals for Turkish side Alanyaspor adding to his tally of 16 last season, and had been tipped for a sensational return to St James' Park.

While sources close to United expectedly rejected the claims - the story did get fans reminiscing about previous heroes, and when asked on social media which single player from the last five years they'd like to see return to the club, they replies were spread across the same three or four players.

Yohan Cabaye - currently at Saint-Étienne

Left in January 2014 to join PSG in a deal worth £19 million. Having joined United from Lille for just £4 million, it represented quite the profit.

The Magpies had seen the good and bad of the Frenchman who went on strike to try and force through a move to Arsenal.

'Without a shadow of a doubt'

'This man'

'He made everything tick'

Gini Wijnaldum - currently at Liverpool

The Dutchman left Newcastle United in the summer immediately after relegation - setting Liverpool back £25 million.

Since then the midfielder has lifted the Champions League, gone close to winning the Premier League title and has been nominated for the Ballon D'or.

He only spent one season on Tyneside but showed so much promise.

'What a player'

'We're missing something [without him]'

'Stupid question'

Hatem Ben Arfa - currently a free agent

A frustrating figure at Newcastle who on his day would excite fans like few other could do.

End up leaving to join Hull City on loan before being released from his contract in January 2015 to sign for Nice.

Having signed for United in August 2010, it was five years of injuries, skill, and memorable goals.

Efforts against Bolton and Blackburn Rovers stand long in the memory.

'Always Hatem Ben Arfa'

'Had the flair and ability'

Demba Ba - currently at Istanbul Basaksehir

Left to join Chelsea in January 2013 after one-and-half seasons on Tyneside scoring 29 goals.

United took a gamble on Ba - problems with his knee meant moves to other clubs fell through - and it was a gamble worth taking.

Ba took to the fans instantly, and is still held in high regard by them.

Ba, better than Joelinton and Gayle?

'Ba, every time'

There were also mentioned for Ayoze Perez, Salomon Rondon, and Florian Thauvin as well as manager Rafa Benitez with one response quipping 'then we don't need any of them back.'
