As many as 50,000 Scots now infected by coronavirus, says chief medical officer

Scotland's chief medical officer has predicted the number of people infected by the coronavirus has reached almost 50,000.

Catherine Calderwood said she believed there to be "40-50,00 cases in Scotland" and added that "many of them don't yet know that they are infected with the virus".

The number of people who had tested positive for Covid-19 had risen by 175 from Wednesday's total, from 719 to 894.

Another three coronavirus patients in Scotland died overnight, bringing the total number of deaths to 25.

Speaking at today's press conference (Thursday) alongside the First Minister Calderwood said: " We are probably looking at the order of 40-50,000 people in Scotland who are now infected with the virus.

"Many of them don't yet know that they are infected with the virus nor indeed do they realise they are potentially going to infect those around them."

She added that while "it has been very encouraging to see the empty streets and the shops and the empty transport in Scotland" the country was in this for the "long haul".

She reiterated the importance of staying indoors to help slow down the spread of the virus.

Calderwood said: "Confining yourself to your own household, not mixing with other people who then are mixing with others is so key and so important.

"The virus is out there. You do not know who has it."
