As it happened: Here's how the Brexit deal was defeated

British Prime Minister Theresa May's Brexit agreement with the European Union looks to be dead after MPs voted it down for a second time, leaving the door open for a no-deal exit or an extension of the negotiation period.

Mrs May had clinched legally binding assurances from the European Union over the controversial Irish backstop, but that was not enough to sway the number of British MPs needed to pass the deal.

It was defeated 391-242.
