'As I said' - Gini Wijnaldum makes Liverpool claim after PSG struggles

Gini Wijnaldum has once again been speaking about the differences between Liverpool and PSG, as he continues to adapt to the French side.

The 30-year-old left the Reds this summer after allowing his contract to expire, teaming up with former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino at the Parc des Princes.

Having featured in all 38 league games for Jurgen Klopp last season, making 34 starts, Wijnaldum became accustomed to an almost guaranteed starting berth during his five years at Anfield.

However, the Dutchman has started just two league games since September for PSG and has admitted his new club reminds him of when he first signed for Liverpool .

“As I said, the Liverpool team have played for years together. We made a lot of progress and evolved before winning the Champions League,” he said, when asked if his current team reminded him of the Reds’ 2019 side, according to Paris United .

“Here at PSG, it looks like my first season in Liverpool; we discover each other.

“The most important thing is to get used to the players. It’s hard to compare these two teams.”

The Netherlands international played a pivotal role for Liverpool as Jurgen Klopp developed the club into title contenders, eventually winning both the Champions League and Premier League.

Reports in France recently suggested that the “formation of cliques” within PSG had put Wijnaldum’s place in the squad under threat, in favour of Leandro Paredes.

The midfielder has been open about the challenges he has faced in adapting to his new club but is adamant that his prospects will improve.

“In Liverpool we knew each other well, we formed the same team for five years. We had our identity, it was different. The style of play too”, he said, ahead of PSG’s Champions League clash with RB Leipzig.

“Here, I think the coach prefers when we rotate, when we do not keep the same position.

“In Liverpool we were together for five years and here it’s a new team, I have to get used to my teammates, this is our first season together.”
