As Bristol City, Leeds United, Nottingham Forest and fans from the rest of the Championship wait for the 2019/20 EFL fixtures, here's how they're compiled

Fixtures release day is one of the biggest in any football league in the world as fans cast their eye over what's to come for their sides next season.

For EFL teams across the three divisions, Thursday June 20 is the day when all will be revealed as the fixtures for the 2019/20 campaign come out at 9am.

But how are the fixtures compiled? That's the question on many fans' lips when they first see their team's frustrating period of games at a particular point in the season.

The answer is both the Premier League and the EFL work with an IT contractor who is experienced with fixture production.

The actual fixture process for the 2019/20 campaign started way back last November when everyone met up to work out a draft schedule.

Following another meeting with the contractors in March, a fixture list was worked out ten days after the play-off final between Aston Villa and Derby County.

That has since been reviewed by all parties even including the chief police officers in regards to safety.

When it comes to the process of checking the fixture list, the EFL's Competitions Manager, Paul Snellgrove, explained last summer how the governing body make sure everything is spot on.

"It is checked manually by the League’s Football Services department. We also have a number of reporting tools and reports that are produced by the IT contractor," Snellgrove told the EFL website.

"Repetition of fixtures is something we look at, certainly over the Christmas period.

"We compare it to the fixture questionnaires and information that is sent in by clubs, along with any other information that we accumulate from train companies and police forces regarding events that go on up and down the country, that could potentially clash with fixtures in that area."

Clubs and media organisations also get the fixtures early before the 9am announcement and there is usually a three-week wait from the end of the season until the next campaign's schedule is announced.

Now for fans the new season cannot come soon enough.
