Aryna Sabalenka beats Amanda Anisimova to defend US Open title and vanquish final demons - live

Aryna Sabalenka banished a year of frustration to defend the US Open and win a fourth grand slam title, defeating Amanda Anisimova 6-3 7-6 (7-3). World No 1 Sabalenka becomes the first player to defend their US Open crown since Serena Williams in 2014.

Following painful defeats to Madison Keys in the Australian Open final and Coco Gauff in the French Open final, as well as to Anisimova in the Wimbledon semi-finals two months ago, Sabalenka ensured she finished the season with a grand slam title with an emphatic display in New York.

After marching into a first-set lead by winning four games in a row, Sabalenka looked to be heading for a dominant win after getting the break in the second. Anisimova stayed alive to break Sabalenka as she served for the match, but the 27-year-old regained her composure to win the tiebreak.

Anisimova has now lost back-to-back grand slam finals but the American showed impressive resilience to bounce back from her 6-0 6-0 defeat to Iga Swiatek at Wimbledon. The 24-year-old beat Swiatek and Naomi Osaka to reach the final, but it was Sabalenka who came out on top in the battle of the big-hitters.

Aryna Sabalenka on using sport psychologist and cutting ties to deal with mental health by herself

11:02 , Jack Rathborn

“Well, mental health, it's very important, and I've been working with psychologist for four or five years, and she helped me a lot at the beginning, especially to understand that everything is possible as long as you put the work in and you dedicate your time, life for your dream. She helped me a lot.

“But then at some point I realized that I was relying on her so much. I thought that, okay, she has to fix me, she has to give me an answer. So I wasn't really taking the responsibility over my actions. I was making the same mistake over and over again, and I was getting upset that it's not helping.

“At some point I decided, okay, I have to take responsibility, and I have to figure it by myself by, like, thinking, analyzing, and understanding myself better. I think it actually worked really well. I think that was the right move for me.”

Amanda Anisimova on the shift in mindset this autumn after back-to-back Grand Slam finals

10:51 , Jack Rathborn

“Yeah, it was actually a goal of mine in the start of the year. Me and my agent, we were joking about that (laughing), that that would be a goal of mine, and it was kind of far in the reach when I was starting off the year, but now I have a chance to qualify and play in it, so that's really special.

“It's really hard to look at the fall and think about that right now, because I mean, today was a pretty hard loss to take.”

Amanda Anisimova on utilising mindfulness during US Open

10:39 , Jack Rathborn

“Yeah, I feel like every match is obviously going to be different, and it's something I always try and do, and I try and practice a lot of mindfulness things and a lot of things that will just calm my nervous system and give myself the best chance to have energy and positive mindset throughout the match.

“I feel like I've done my best, honestly, with all of that stuff. Also, listening about Wimbledon every single day of the last two weeks, I mean, I've done really well with that. I've tried to turn everything around for myself. Obviously today was better than my last final, but yeah, again, today was a really tough match. She made it difficult for me, but it doesn't mean that I didn't do all the same things that I've been doing every other day.”

Amanda Anisimova on the power of the crowd on her side in US Open final

10:28 , Jack Rathborn

“It was an amazing atmosphere, of course, and I tried to enjoy the atmosphere as much as I could. Especially in the second set when I started to come back, they were really backing me, and I think that was really helpful to try and stay in the match.

“I've been really motivated, and I really wanted to give myself the best shot in the final. I don't know. Like, making it to the final is obviously really special, but it would have been a dream come true to make it all the way.

“But, yeah, I mean, of course I'm motivated, and I hope I can keep working really hard to give myself more opportunities to be in more and more finals.”

Aryna Sabalenka on the key change made before US Open

10:05 , Jack Rathborn

“Going into this final I decided for myself that I'm going to control my emotions. I'm not going to let them take control over me, and doesn't matter what happens in the match. If she break me back or if she plays incredible tennis -- of course, it's a finals, and she's going to be fighting, especially after recent final, I knew that she would love to have, like, a better result.

“My mindset was just going out there, fight for every point. Doesn't matter of the situation. Just focus on myself and focus on things that I have to do to win the match. I think from what I understand today, that the lesson learned and I really hope it will never happen again if I'm going to be playing another finals, that I will be more in control.”

Aryan Sabalenka on lessons learned from Grand Slams this year

10:04 , Jack Rathborn

“You know, like, after Australia Open, I thought that the right way would be just to forget it and move on, but then the same thing happened at the French Open. So after French Open I figured that, okay, maybe it's time for me to sit back and to look at those finals and to maybe learn something, because I didn't want it to happen again and again and again.

“So, yeah, I was in Mykonos, reading my book, enjoying the view (laughing), and I was just thinking that why would I let my emotions to take control over me in those two finals? It felt like I thought that, okay, if I made it to the final, it means that I'm going to win it, you know, and I sort of didn't expect players to come out there and to fight. You know, I thought that everything going to go easily my way, which was completely wrong mindset, you know?”

“She came out, and she was playing great tennis from the start. Obviously she's No. 1, and she's very capable of playing amazing tennis, which she did that today. I give all the credit to her.

:I also have a pretty good record in tiebreaks, I'm pretty sure. I just wasn't playing great. Couldn't serve again. I mean, that's the reason why she's No. 1, and that's why I said that in my speech. I truly really admire her, and she puts in a lot of work, and that's why she's where she is.”

“Of course, she was playing amazing. She was playing very aggressive and doing all the right things, so she made it very difficult for me today.”

Amanda Anisimova said her struggles on serve during her US Open final defeat to Aryna Sabalenka were not helped by the closed roof on Arthur Ashe Stadium and her inability to see the ball on her ball toss. What a performance from the World No 1, and an impressive way to close it out after Anisimova broke back when she was serving it out.

That was a one-sided tiebreak, and Anisimova did not bring her best level. But it’s been a brilliant run from the American, who looks disconsolate after losing a second grand slam final in a row.

Anisimova holds to stay within touch. I would not be surprised, though, if Sabalenka now puts all of her efforts in holding serve and seeing out the match.

It’s what she did against Jessica Pegula and requires three more holds to get there.

This has been an immense turnaround from Sabalenka. Anisimova looks seething after being dragged from side to side. Everything is in control on Sabalenka’s end.

It’s been a while since Anisimova has been able to give a Sabalenka serve a good crack. The World No 1 skips through her opening service game, having none of the issues that Anisimova went through in the previous one.

*Aryna Sabalenka 6-3 0-1 Amanda Anisimova

Saturday 6 September 2025 22:04 , Jamie Braidwood

Anisimova looks to be bothered by something which appears to be disrupting her serve.

She makes two double-faults in a nervy start to the second set, being dragged into a deuce game.

But Anisimova gets through it to take the hold and stop the run of Sabalenka games.

FIRST SET!*Aryna Sabalenka 6-3 Amanda Anisimova*

Saturday 6 September 2025 21:56 , Jamie Braidwood

Anisimova was looking in charge but Sabalenka reels off four games in a row to take the first set! There were too many errors from Anisimova and a forehand goes long on the return when facing set point.

Incredibly, Anisimova has made 13 winners to 16 unforced errors.

This match is not on Sabalenka’s racket at all. She wins the set with just three winners to four unforced errors.

Those numbers are almost unheard of for Sabalenka.

Anisimova spins around in frustration after a double fault on 15-15... but it’s followed by another! The crowd tries to respond as Anisimova faces two break points.

There is suddenly the sound of thunder overhead and it’s a bad sign for Anisimova. Sabalenka gets the break to lead as the American puts her backhand wide!

Sabalenka will serve for the set.

Aryna Sabalenka 4-3 Amanda Anisimova*

Saturday 6 September 2025 21:49 , Jamie Braidwood

So we’ve gone 2-0 Sabalenka, 3-2 Anisimova, now we’re back to 4-3 Sabalenka, but on serve.

Sabalenka is landing more serves in play than Anisimova but the World No 1 is winning less than 50 per cent of her first-serve points, such is the brilliant of Anisimova’s return.

The same is true on the other side.

* Aryna Sabalenka 3-3 Amanda Anisimova

Saturday 6 September 2025 21:45 , Jamie Braidwood

Anisimova’s semi-final with Osaka was a wild one, with momentum swings throughout. It already feels like this will be similar.

Suddenly, Anisimova is broken to love. After a couple of misses from Anisimova, Sabalenka finds a deep return of her own and Anisimova nets.

All square once more.

Awesome depth from Anisimova, with Sabalenka again looking a little off-balance when defending the baseline against the American’s power.

Anisimova finds another brilliant strike, this time on the crosscourt forehand, and gets another look at break point. She takes it too! Superb return from Anisimova, right on the baseline, and Sabalenka hits out!

What a turnaround.

Roars as Anisimova holds to level the match. The American found a body serve that kicked up and appeared to strike Sabalenka in the chest. The World No 1 looked frustrated at the call.

Sabalenka does what Anisimova could not and takes her opportunity to break early! Anisimova is rushed into consecutive forehand errors, with Sabalenka taking charge to move ahead.

Anisimova went a break down in the first set against Swiatek and Osaka - but not having the opportunity to go ahead herself.

What a gripping start already. Anisimova’s huge return brings up two more break points but Sabalenka stays alive, with the American going long against the second-serve.

Sabalenka has to wait for a butterfly to leave the court, and escapes with a battling hold as Anisimova fires long on the forehand.

Three break points saved from Sabalenka.

Sabalenka goes from 30-0 up to break point and 30-40!

But this is all about the Anisimova backhand. She rips one down the line and then attacks the Sabalenka second serve. The World No 1 already feels the pressure and double faults!

The big question as we prepare to start the US Open final is how Anisimova will settle into her second grand slam final.

She of course made the worst possible start against Iga Swiatek at Wimbledon, going on to lose 6-0 6-0.

But she has returned to the US Open a more resilient player. She lost her serve in the opening game against both Swiatek and Naomi Osaka in the quarter-finals and semi-finals, and yet bounced back.

The second question is how Sabalenka will react to Anisimova’s ball. These are two of the biggest hitters in the game, and Anisimova leads the head-to-head.

Sabalenka won the toss and elects to serve.

US Open final: Aryna Sabalenka in third straight final

Saturday 6 September 2025 20:48 , Jamie Braidwood

In 2023, Aryna Sabalenka was stunned by Coco Gauff in a brutal US Open final defeat. In 2024, the World No 1 earned revenge as she defeated Jessica Pegula to win her first title in New York.

But 2025 has been a frustrating year for Sabalenka with defeats in two grand slam finals and another heartbreaker at Wimbledon, losing to Amanda Anisimova.

For the third year in a row, Sabalenka plays an American in the US Open final. Which way will it go?

The story of how Amanda Anisimova bounced back from Wimbledon defeat

Saturday 6 September 2025 20:16 , Jamie Braidwood

On the night before Amanda Anisimova faced Iga Swiatek in the US Open quarter-final, in a rematch of her nightmare 6-0 6-0 defeat to the same opponent in the Wimbledon final just seven weeks before, she decided to put herself through the worst experience of her professional career again. “Nobody told me to, but I watched it back, as painful as it was,” Anisimova laughed.

Just 53 days after the whitewash to Swiatek in the Wimbledon final, the American claimed revenge, winning 6-4 6-3 against the World No 2.

What has Aryna Sabalenka said about facing Amanda Anisimova?

Saturday 6 September 2025 20:01 , Jamie Braidwood

“I think I have to trust myself, and I have to go after my shots. I felt like in that match at Wimbledon, I was doubting a lot my decisions, and that was the main thing that was bringing a lot of unforced errors.

“I gave her a lot of opportunities, and of course, she played incredible tennis, but I feel like I had my opportunities. I didn't use them, and I feel like the key for me going to be just go out there, obviously fight, but trust my decisions and go after my shots.”

“We've had very, very tough matches,” Anisimova said. “A lot of them have actually been at grand slams, too, especially early on in my career. But I think the standout one was probably Wimbledon. It was really a seesaw match, which is almost always the case when I play her.”

Drama in the US Open men's doubles final!

Saturday 6 September 2025 19:44 , Jamie Braidwood

Joe Salisbury and Neal Skupski blew three championship points as their bid to become the first British player to win the US Open men’s doubles title since 1903 ended in a heartbreaking defeat to Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos.

Salisbury and Skupski led 5-4, 0-40 in the third set but were unable to break, with the Spaniard Granollers and Argentinian Zeballos then breaking the fifth seeds in the very next game.

Granollers and Zeballos, who also defeated Salisbury and Skupski to win the French Open doubles title in June, then served out a dramatic victory, winning 3-6 7-6 (7-4) 7-5 in a thrilling final.

The third-set scoreline was the same as it was in Paris, where Granollers and Zeballos won 6-0 6-7 (5-7) 7-5 to deny Salisbury and Skupski in their bid to become the first British pair to win Roland Garros since 1933.

Amanda Anisimova on combatting Aryna Sabalenka's behaviour on court

Saturday 6 September 2025 19:31 , Jamie Braidwood

“I don't really care what my opponent is doing. I wouldn't say she's also overly emotional. I feel like she's pretty normal.

“She's a huge fighter. When I play her, I'm really focused on myself, not really looking at what she's doing, like, the whole time. But, yeah, it's insignificant to me what she does.”

Saturday 6 September 2025 19:15 , Jamie Braidwood

Aryna Sabalenka is in the curious position of being the World No 1 yet without winning a grand slam title this season. She lost close finals to Madison Keys in the Australian Open final and Coco Gauff in the French Open final, before losing to Amanda Anisimova in the Wimbledon semi-finals.

“I’m super excited to give myself another opportunity, another final,” Sabalenka said. “If I’ll be able to hold that trophy, it’s going to mean a lot for me. I’ll be just the happiest person on earth probably.”

Aryna Sabalenka on controlling her emotions in US Open final

Saturday 6 September 2025 19:01 , Jamie Braidwood

:What happened in Paris, definitely not going to happen here and never. I learned that lesson and I will never behave that way. It’s not me.

“I was super emotional. I let it go and let emotions take control over me, and it’s not who I am. It’s never going to happen again.”

Aryna Sabalenka vows no repeat of Paris behaviour in US Open final

Saturday 6 September 2025 18:46 , Jamie Braidwood

Aryna Sabalenka has vowed to be gracious whatever happens in her US Open final clash against Amanda Anisimova.

The world number one was heavily criticised for a post-match press conference following her defeat by Coco Gauff in the French Open final, which she attributed to her own errors rather than crediting her opponent.

Sabalenka later apologised publicly and privately, branding the comments “completely unprofessional”.

Amanda Anisimova on coming back from Wimbledon heartache

Saturday 6 September 2025 18:15 , Jamie Braidwood

The manner in which Anisimova reacted to the horror of the Wimbledon final has allowed a mental transformation that may not have occurred without the nightmare of what unfolded eight weeks ago, allowing the resilience she has shown to shine under the pressure of being the last American standing.

“I think it just shows that I have worked really hard, especially on my mental game and not giving up,” Anisimova said. “Like today, I could have easily said, ‘oh, she's playing better than me, and I can't really do anything’. I really tried to find any way I could to stay in the match, even though it was extremely tough, and she was playing really great tennis.

“I think I have really worked on myself to really be able to handle those moments and to believe in myself, even when it feels like what is there to believe in, when you're not playing that well. I think I have really done a better job of that, and especially since the Wimbledon final. I think I have really shifted with my attitude as well.”

“The hope is to be the champion.”

After avenging her defeat to Swiatek in the quarter-finals, Anisimova went one step further by overturning Naomi Osaka’s lead in a back-and-forth semi-final across almost three hours, setting up a final against the World No 1 Aryna Sabalenka.

Welcome

Just eight weeks ago, Anisimova lost her first grand slam final 6-0 6-0 at Wimbledon to Iga Swiatek, but the 24-year-old American has put that disappointment behind her to reach her first US Open final.

The eighth seed earned revenge against Swiatek in the quarter-finals then defeated Naomi Osaka in a semi-final thriller to set up the chance for the ultimate redemption against Sabalenka.

Sabalenka is also out for revenge after her defeat to Anisimova in the Wimbledon semi-finals, while the World No 1 aims to become the first player to defend a US Open singles title since Serena Williams in 2014.

Sabalenka is through to a third grand slam final this year, but lost the Australian Open final to Madison Keys and the French Open final to Coco Gauff.
