Arvin Appiah hopes to return from England trip with goals and a trophy - and as a better player for Nottingham Forest

Arvin Appiah hopes to return from his latest England adventure with some goals and a trophy - and as an even better player for Nottingham Forest.

The winger is in action with the under-18 side in Slovakia next week, where England are taking part in an eight-team tournament.

Appiah, 18, has played at every age group between under-15 and under-19 for his country - and says he feels proud every time he gets to pull on a Three Lions shirt.

But he also feels that every game with England is an education - and that the experience will only make him stronger, when the new Championship season kicks off in August.

“Playing with England does help. It is very different to club football. It is very technical and tactical,” said Appiah. “It is different, it is a challenge. But I enjoy the football we play.

How one man has rolled back the years to help Arvin Appiah torment opposition defences with Nottingham Forest

“You playing with players who are technically gifted from other clubs, which helps to improve your game.

“I enjoy it every time I go away with the England squad. I am humbled and privileged every time I get the call-up. It is good to get the chance.

“I am going to go there and aim to win the tournament. Hopefully I can get a few goals and we can come back with a trophy.

“Every time I put the shirt on, I feel humbled. I have played for England at many age groups, since I was 15 and it means a lot, every time.”

Nottingham Forest quash reports linking them with Portuguese coach Ivo Vieira

England will play group games alongside Slovakia, Russia and Mexico. Their final position will decide whether they face Croatia, Spain, Czech Republic or Ukraine in their last game.

The tournament kicks-off on Monday (11am) for England, with a game against Russia.

Appiah has made two starts and five sub appearances for the Reds, since marking his debut with a goal against Burton, and is regarded as being an outstanding prospect at the City Ground.

He has been with the Reds since he was nine and Martin O’Neill expects him to play a bigger part again in the first team next season.

“I was nine when I first signed here, I came from Vernon Colts, a local team,” said Appiah. “It has been a long and hard journey into the first team, but it has all been worth it.

“I was originally born in Amsterdam. But I moved over when I was six or seven, when I started on my football career, here in Nottingham.

The brilliant, the good and the not-so-good - how Nottingham Forest players rated this season

“I can remember some of the language, but I have forgotten a lot of it. I have still got family over there in Holland.

“It was always going to be England for me, when it came to international football. It will always be England for me.”
