Artist Luke Jerram brings stunning art installation to Bristol - where to find it

A world-renowned artist has donated a stunning artwork to the University of Bristol.

Students at the university will be able to enjoy Luke Jerram's spectacular Palm Temple when they return to campus.

The installation is based on a spiralling lamella dome structure, which has been cut in half and placed in parallel - like two palms coming together in prayer.

It is on display outside the entrance to the university's School of Chemistry - but is free for anyone to visit.

Luke, who comes from Bristol, originally made the art to celebrate the 600th anniversary of Brunelleschi’s dome of Florence Cathedral and exhibited it in London early in 2020.

It is made from cedar wood and imitates stained glass with its dichroic windows, which are able to display different colours according to the light.

A lamella roof is a particular style in architecture, consisting of a crisscrossing pattern of arches hinged together to form a diamond pattern.

The floor is also mirrored, which reflects the dome above.

"Living in Bristol for over 20 years, I'm always keen to contribute to the creative landscape of the city," said Luke, 46.

"After the presentation of the Palm Temple in London the artwork was looking for a permanent home.

"Like many of the artworks I've made in the past, I'm happy to give artworks away to cultural and educational institutions who might also allow the public to visit them."

Inside the dome is Jerram's 'Extinction Bell', which chimes between 150 and 200 times a day at random to indicate the number of species lost worldwide every 24 hours.

In February 2020 Luke was awarded an honorary degree by the University of Bristol in recognition of his inspirational international art career.
