Artist Gavin Turk is calling on the public to send him pictures of eggs for a huge montage

Artist Gavin Turk is enlisting the help of the general public in “a mass creative act” to create a huge montage.

He has cast a giant one tonne bronze of an egg, which stretches just over two metres from end to end, as part of the collaboration with Photo London.

Turk, who rose to fame as part of the YBA scene that included Tracey Emin, hopes it will inspire other people to send in their images of eggs which he will use for the montage that will be installed at Somerset House next month.

He said he hoped his sculpture, also on show in Somerset House, would “become a lure for portraits or selfies”.

He said: “I was having a complex, if that’s the right word, about the way people were looking at art as like a backdrop for selfies or looking at art through the lens of their camera.

“Looking at art by photographing it has now become a dominant way of behaving. Art is being constantly exposed to the glare of the internet and social media; everyone has a camera and a new way of seeing.

“I want to take this moment a step further and invite the world’s photographers to take part in a mass creative act.”
