Artist Charlotte Prodger says she wants to 'hide away' following her Turner Prize win

Video artist Charlotte Prodger has said she wants to “hide away” after winning the £25,000 Turner Prize.

The former student of Goldsmiths, University of London, 44, who filmed her entry entirely on an iPhone, said she was “blown away” by its success.

Prodger collected the prize — which has previously been won by Grayson Perry and film director Steve McQueen — from author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie at a ceremony at Tate Britain last night.

She said she was honoured by her win, but added: “I hope it doesn’t make any difference. It’s amazing to be nominated but I’d like to be kind of normal, I’d like to kind of hide”.

Her film Bridgit takes in Seventies gay history, scenes of Scotland shot through a train window, a cat pawing a lamp and her personal thoughts.

Prodger admitted it felt “strange” to put so much of herself on screen. “It does fell a little weird to do it when you first show it because you don’t know really what people are going to think, it’s strange at first, but quite interesting,” she said.

The other three shortlisted artists, who all work with video, were each given £5,000.

The prize, set up in 1984 to promote contemporary British art, was judged by a panel including novelist Tom McCarthy and Tate Britain director Alex Farquharson.

The work of all four shortlisted artists can be seen in an exhibition at Tate Britain until January 6.
