A lorry was abandoned after driving down the wrong side of the motorway.
Police were called to the westbound carriageway of the M62 at junction 20 for Rochdale and Oldham last night.
One lane of the motorway was shut off while the lorry was removed.
The lane was reopened a short time after.
Highways England tweeted: "#M62 westbound at #J20 (#Thornham #ThornhamIsland) lane 1 (of 3) has been closed following a vehicle that travelled contra & gone eastbound on the westbound carriageway & has been abandoned still facing the wrong way. @NWmwaypolice @gmptraffic on scene dealing. @OfficialTfGM"
About two hours later they added: "Update on #M62 westbound at #J20 (#Thornham #ThornhamIsland) earlier incident > Vehicle has now been recovered and the scene is now clear. All lanes back OPEN. Thanks to @NWmwaypolice @gmptraffic for their assistance. @OfficialTfGM"
