'Arteta has seen the light!' - Arsenal fans back surprise Mesut Ozil decision against Man City

Mikel Arteta's team selection for tonight's Premier League fixture against Manchester City has got a number of Arsenal fans talking.

Following over three months of no football in England, the Gunners are finally back in action as they look to keep hopes of a top-four/five finish alive by playing their game in hand.

It perhaps doesn't get any more tougher than facing a City side who won the reverse meeting at the Emirates Stadium back in December 3-0, with Kevin De Bruyne in superb form that day.

Interestingly, Arteta was in the City dugout for the game six months ago and makes his first return to the Etihad Stadium since leaving to become Arsenal head coach.

And the team he has chosen to inflict defeat on Pep Guardiola has raised a few eyebrows.

As expected, Bernd Leno keeps his place in between the sticks. One of many surprise calls Arteta has made is in the back four as Hector Bellerin and Tierney start at full-back, but there's no place in central defence for David Luiz.

Instead Shkodran Mustafi partners Pablo Mari.

It appears the Gunners have switched to a 4-3-3 system with Granit Xhaka being joined in the engine room by Matteo Guendouzi and Joe Willock.

In attack, Buyako Saka and Eddie Nketiah get the nod alongside Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as Alexandre Lacazette, Gabriel Martinelli and Nicolas Pepe have to settle for a place on the bench.

Arsenal XI: Leno, Bellerin, Mustafi, Mari, Tierney, Guendouzi, Xhaka, Willock, Saka, Aubameyang, Nketiah

Most of the reaction from Gunners supporters on social media has centred around Mesut Ozil not even making the matchday squad and that's despite the fact teams can now name up to nine substitutes.

Take a look at some of the best responses on Twitter...

What Arteta has said:

"We have to take every game in the same way, to go there and win the game. We know that every stadium and every opponent is completely different.

"I have to focus and I have to try to convince my players to focus on what we have to do, we cannot control everything that Man City does, it's impossible.

"Even if we want to and I will drive the players mad in order to do that. So I just try to convince them on what we can do to try and beat them, what is the best plan possible for us to have the best possible chance to compete in that game and to win it.

"Let's see how much we are able to do that because here it's easy, but to go there on the pitch and show it for 96 minutes is different."
