Art project highlights the issues affecting older gay men living in Ireland

An artwork collection on the experiences and issues affecting older gay men living in Ireland is to be unveiled in Cork.

A group of 10 older GBTQI men have been participating in a 9-week collaborative process of shared conversation and art projects with English artist Mark Storor.

The project is commissioned by Gay Project in Cork and is funded by The Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth .

The project emphasises the participatory arts process. It aims to develop a creative language that allows stories of older, often marginalised, GBTQI men living in Ireland to be heard.

Gay Project co-ordinator Ailsa Spindler told the Irish Mirror: "The men who have participated in 'Before The Rainbow and After' have demonstrated their strength, courage, and resolve to show how it feels to be an older gay man living in Ireland in 2022.

"The result is a celebration of their lives, which acknowledges the struggles they faced growing up in a society which demonised and vilified them; however it shows how they have flourished as Irish society has become more accepting and inclusive.

"We salute these men and thousands like them. However, we must be vigilant to ensure that the rights they fought for are never taken away."
