Art enthusiasts can curate own exhibitions at home online with new free tool

Art enthusiasts missing London’s galleries and museums will be able to put on their own free exhibitions.

The launch of a new online tool, Curations, will allow anyone to curate their own digital show from Art UK’s collection, the online home to the country’s artworks.

More than 250,000 works by 46,000 artists, including Paul Gauguin, Antony Gormley, Frida Kahlo, David Hockney and William Blake, are now on the platform, which can be searched by theme, artist, venue or movement, and arranged however the curator chooses.

Virtual visitors can also browse existing exhibitions, which include all sorts from Beyond the Brotherhood: The Pre-Raphaelite Legacy, an exhibition mounted at the Southampton City Art Gallery and Sculptures of Balancing Dogs, a series curated by Art UK.

Curated exhibitions can be shared publicly or kept private.

Art UK’s director Andrew Ellis says: “Curations is an example of what is possible when you digitally connect the national art collection. It means museums and the public alike can now bring together artworks from institutions across the country, tell the stories behind the art, and share their Curations with others. Art UK is all about democratising the nation’s art collection. Curations takes this a step further.”
