Art and architecture: 2008 in pictures

Peter Doig
With subjects that include a Canadian adolescence, drugs, skiing and adult life in Trinidad, Scottish-born Peter Doig is one of the most fascinating and influential of contemporary artists, and February sees his first mid-career retrospective.

Le Corbusier interior
The Villa Savoye in Poissy, France, created by the great Swiss-French designer and architect Le Corbusier. October sees the opening of a major exhibition of Le Corbusier's work, featuring furniture, paintings, book designs, interiors, polemics, photographs and films, which opens in the crypt of Liverpool's Metropolitan Cathedral, before moving to London.

Gauguin's Her Name was Vairaumati
Paul Gauguin's Her Name was Vairaumati (1892), part of the From Russia exhibition at the Royal Academy which uses works by Gauguin, Matisse, Picasso and others to explore the relationship between French and Russian art during the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Hadrian's Wall
Walkers on Hadrian's Wall near Crag Lough, Northumberland. July sees the opening of the exhibition Hadrian: Empire and Conflict, which examines the architectural legacy of the famous Roman emperor, from the eponymous wall to the Temple of Zeus in Athens.

The Fiat 500
Fiat UK launches the new Fiat 500 in January, an updated version of the classic Fiat 500 Nuova of 1957. Slightly larger than its predecessor, the new 500 is nonetheless a modern design wonder that leads the field in the recent classic small car revival. Photograph: PR
The Anglican Cathedral, Liverpool
The interior of the Anglican Cathedral, Liverpool, where a New Year peal of bells rang in the city's tenure as the 2008 European city of culture. Art-themed events will take place throughout the year, including an exhibition on Joseph Wright of Derby in Liverpool and the Le Corbusier design retrospective.

St Pancras Station
The recently unveiled St Pancras Station, one of the key works in the 2008 London Festival of Architecture. Organised by architectural impresario Peter Murray and chaired by the novelist and historian Peter Ackroyd, the festival is spread across five "hubs" in the capital and also features the 2008 Architecture Student Festival.
