'Arsonists' caused blaze that destroyed section of skate park under M32

'Arsonists' set fire to a newly-rejuvenated 'much-loved' skate park under the M32 during the early hours of this morning (Tuesday March 24).

Firefighters were called to the location at the top of Stapleton Road, near to the Eastville junction, at 5:38am.

They used high pressured hose reels to extinguish the blaze.

Photographs today show the half pipe has been completely destroyed with the flames only leaving charred remains. The rest of the park escaped undamaged.

Ward councillor Mhairi Threlfall tweeted: "Hearing reports of a fire at 5:30am morning under the M32, by the skate park. This is a much loved and worked on space that catalysed a lot of work locally. Thanks to AvonFireRescue for attending.

" I hope there isn’t too much damage."

A spokesperson for Avon Fire and Rescue Service said: "Crews used two high pressure hose reel jets to extinguish the fire.

"Cause is thought to be deliberate."

Meanwhile, hours earlier arsonists set fire to two Iceland delivery vans in Southmead. Both events happened shortly after Boris Johnson demanded everyone stay at home to stop the spread of coronavirus.
