Arsonist sent message to his neighbour: 'My flat is on fire again lol'

A man has been jailed after setting fire to his flat in Clifton.

Shannon Dar, 30, of Highbank Drive, was found guilty of arson on Wednesday, July 17, following a three-day trial at Nottingham Crown Court.

During the case he represented himself and refused to attend court.

Dar was sentenced at Nottingham Crown Court on Wednesday, August 7.

He was given an extended sentence of 10 years in prison, comprising of a custodial term of five years and an extension period of five years, a restraining order to last for 10 years and he was ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £170.

On Wednesday, August 29, 2018, Nottinghamshire Police and Nottinghamshire Fire Service attended a fire at Dar's flat in Highbank Drive.

No one was injured in the incident.

The jury concluded that Dar had deliberately set fire to bedding in his ground floor flat.

Moments after the fire, the jury was told Dar sent a WhatsApp message to a neighbour, using the phrase 'my flat is on fire again lol.'

Dar then fled the scene.

It was also found that Dar had attempted to force a move to a new property on May 17, 2018 when he left food in a portable oven, causing smoke damage to his flat.

However, in the weeks following, he failed to co-operate with Nottingham City Homes who made several attempts to assess and repair the damage.

Detective Sergeant Nigel Malik, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: "Dar, showing no consideration to the safety of others in the flats or indeed the costs to the public, set fire to his own flat.

"Police and fire investigations worked together to prove the case against Dar. He is now behind bars and no longer a risk to the public."
