Arson investigation launched after skip set on fire in Blyth residential street

An arson investigation has been launched after a skip was set on fire in Blyth.

Police received a report of a fire at an address on Cypress Gardens, which is thought to have been started at about 10.50pm on Tuesday.

Fire crews attended and extinguished the fire. Nobody was injured.

Officers are investigating the fire and are appealing to the community for help in identifying those responsible.

Neighbourhood Inspector Jonathan Caisley said: “This could very easily have been a different story. The fire from the skip was incredibly close to spreading to a nearby house.

“We urge anyone with any information to get in touch with officers so we can ensure that those responsible face the consequences of their actions.”

He added: “We are also aware there have been reports of people fly-tipping in the area creating easy targets for arsonists, who have then taken advantage of the discarded waste and used it to start fires.

“We’re asking residents to report anyone suspected of fly-tipping or sites where waste has been dumped to their local council.”

Anyone with information is asked to visit the report an incident section of the Northumbria Police website, quoting reference number 258 of April 8.
