Arson investigation launched after fire at a block of flats in Washington

Police have launched an investigation into a suspected arson attack at a block of flats in Sunderland.

Emergency services were called to a fire inside an address on Collingwood Court, Sulgrave, Washington, yesterday (Monday, December 28) shortly after 10pm.

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service said they had four appliances, two officers and an aerial ladder platform in attendance at the scene as they worked to extinguish the fire.

Thankfully, no one was found inside the property and an investigation into the cause of the fire was launched.

Northumbria Police were also called to the scene with officers currently treating the incident as suspected arson.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "Shortly after 10.20pm yesterday (Monday) we were alerted a fire inside an address on Collingwood Court, Sulgrave, Washington.

"Emergency services attended the scene and no one was found inside the property.

"An investigation has been launched into the cause of the fire, which police are treating as suspected arson.

"Anyone with information is asked to contact police via the ‘Tell Us Something’ page of our website or by calling 101 quoting log 852 281220."
