'Arson attack' on Toxteth home 'could have caused devastation'

Detectives are appealing for information following a suspected arson attack at a Liverpool home.

Emergency services were called to reports of a fire at the back of a property in Toxteth on Monday night.

Initial inquiries have led police to believe it was a targeted attack.

Crews from Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service attended the home, on Morton Street , following reports of a blaze at 10.35pm.

Remorseless murderer chatted up barmaid after getting drunk and high on the run from police

The fire, which did cause damage to the property, was extinguished by firefighters.

Nobody was injured but the fire had the potential to cause "devastation", police said.

Forensic, house-to-house and CCTV inquiries have been launched and officers are appealing for witnesses to come forward after the "reckless" attack.

Detective Inspector Paul Speight said: "Thankfully nobody was at this address at the time but we believe this was a targeted attack which had the potential to cause devastation to any occupants and neighbours. If you saw anyone acting suspiciously in the area around 10.30pm, or have home CCTV and live locally, please check and let us know.

"Anyone reckless enough to carry out such an attack needs to be removed from the streets so tell us what you know and we will do the rest."

*Anyone with information is asked to contact Merseyside Police on Twitter (@MerPolCC), by calling 101 with the reference 19100256600 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
