Arsenic For Tea by Robin Stevens - review

One of three, this is part two of the amazing story of Hazel Wong who is originally from Hong Kong. Hazel’s life takes a dramatic turn when she flies to England to go to Deepdeen Boarding School for girls, where she meets a pretty and confident English girl called Daisy Wells.

The summer holidays had just started and Hazel was staying at Daisy’s. It was Daisy’s birthday and her mum, Lady Hastings, was making a big deal of it. Her mum invited a suspicious man, whom nobody trusted. When someone takes a turn for the worse, everybody had their suspicions. The Wells and Wong detective society was on the case!

I really enjoyed this book by Robin Stevens because of the twists and turns that the plot takes. The surprising jolts in the story make you think non-stop about what will happen next in this exhilarating murder mystery. I think that because it is such a clever story and is based on people around my age it intrigued me even more. It’s one of those stories that you have to talk to someone about otherwise you will explode!

Another thing I really liked about this book is that Hazel’s character is so cleverly written and is developed throughout the story. As you read on, you see how Hazel’s character changes and how she gets less scared to speak her mind. Because it is written in the first person, you get more of an insight into what is going on in her head. She is not the most confident of people, and if the book was written in third person, I don’t think that you would really get the full idea of her side of the story.

The confidence of Daisy’s character is used to draw out Hazel’s personality. Without her to push Hazel to her limits, Hazel would never have been able to achieve the things she did; she needed that little nudge.

All in all I think that this is an amazing story and I highly recommend it to everyone who loves a good mystery!
