Arsene Wenger speaks out on Mikel Arteta's 'influence' despite Arsenal's recent struggles

Arsene Wenger believes that Mikel Arteta can still be successful as Arsenal's manager despite the club's poor start to the season.

The Gunners currently sit 14th in the Premier League table having lost five of their opening ten matches.

Arteta has been praised since his arrival for his willingness to implement positive change on and off the pitch, with the introduction of Per Mertesacker to Arsenal's academy setup an example of the club's desire to build stronger foundations for the future.

Wenger, who is Arsenal's longest serving and most successful manager, revealed in an interview with CBS Sports that he believes the pair have the potential to excel in their coaching careers.

"They were focused and motivated [as players] and after that they have to make their career," he said. "It's not done yet, you know, they've just started.

"They are in a position where they can, I think, represent the Arsenal culture, the way to behave, the way to educate people, the way to play football.

"I think they have a certain ethical aspect in the way they approach their job. They are focused, they have a desire to improve internally and that's good, a good basis. They are intelligent."

Although Wenger is hoping to see Arteta succeed with Arsenal, he feels that the Spaniard must quickly provide tangible evidence of positive change if he is to assert himself as the right man for the job on a long-term basis.

"I don't believe in patience in football, you know, you have three months to have an impact when you arrive somewhere," Wenger continued. "And if I look at my clubs everywhere I arrived, it didn't take me three years to have an influence.

"That's an idea that's floating around but it never works that way. You have an influence at the start, or you never have one.

"I think [Arteta has had that influence]. But I am not at the club. After it's the way the team plays and the games you win or you lose, you know, it's simple.

"It's about results. It's as simple as that."
