Arsene Wenger speaks about his future after agent touts him as potential Benitez successor at Newcastle

Newcastle United remain in protracted contract talks with Rafa Benitez, and it is understood that the Spaniard is the only managerial candidate they are currently considering.

But it is more than a week since Benitez met with owner Mike Ashley and managing director Lee Charnley, and no announcement has yet been made on whether the 59-year-old is going to sign an extension to his deal which expires on June 30.

Although both sides remain hopeful that a positive conclusion can be reached, agents across Europe have been attempting to direct the names of their managerial clients Newcastle's way in case Benitez does not remain at St James' Park - even if the Magpies are dismissing them at this stage.

, who they claim could be persuaded to move to Tyneside.

The Frenchman has never hidden his admiration for Newcastle , regularly praising the city, the club and the stadium throughout his Arsenal career.

During an interview with the BBC, Wenger has admitted he does want to return to football following a full year out of the game - though he has suggested his career in frontline management may be over.

If that was the case, then the already ambitious idea that Wenger could be Benitez's successor, should the Spaniard depart in the coming days and weeks, may be unlikely, though the Frenchman has not conclusively ruled out a return to day-to-day coaching.

"I thought I will come back into management very quickly, but I enjoyed taking a little distance," Wenger told the BBC .

"Now I'm at a crossroads. You will see me again in football. As a manager... I don't know.

"In this year I did a lot of charity work, conferences - and I enjoyed it, I must say, to be a little bit less in highlights and less under stress.

"I'm less intense, but I have a better perspective of what's going on. I see the mistakes managers make and I don't pay the price for it.

"I came to the conclusion I want to share what I learned in my life, because I think life is only useful if, at some stage, you share what you know.

"In what way will it be? Will it be in just winning football games, or will it be in another way? That's what I have to decide and that decision will come very quickly.

"Football is still my passion. I will come back soon - but I cannot tell you exactly in what capacity."

What's more, Wenger's love for Arsenal may prevent him from taking another job in the Premier League , whereby he would have to manage against the Gunners.

During a 22-year tenure in north London, Wenger won three Premier League titles and also lifted the FA Cup on seven occasions.

"I miss competition and I miss Arsenal because I left my heart in there," Wenger add of his Gunners careeer.

"I gave my life to this club for 22 years. Every minute of my life was dedicated to this club and I miss the values we developed inside the club. I support Arsenal. It will be forever my club."

Fans are understandably growing increasingly concerned about Benitez's situation at Newcastle, considering the season ended 12 days ago and no resolution has yet been found.

The Spaniard remains in dialogue with Charnley via email and telephone - however, it is essential the Magpies definitively resolve this situation as soon as possible, because the transfer window is already open and other clubs are making progress when it comes to finalising their plans for next season.
