Arsene Wenger sets Mikel Arteta a challenge at Arsenal

Arsenal legend Arsene Wenger has expressed his hope that Mikel Arteta can restore the club's culture at the Emirates Stadium, following a difficult through years.

The Gunners have suffered a decline since Wenger's departure, without Champions League football for the last three seasons and losing in last season's Europa League final.

Improvements have been shown since Arteta took the helm and Wenger wants the midfielder he signed from Everton to restore the club's culture.

“I worry about the club a lot, I watch the games and I believe there is a culture, a way to play football at Arsenal that I want to be respected. I hope Mikel can get that back,” he told talkSPORT.

“I often say that my heart is still with the club, I think a lot about the period, 22 years in my job is unusual.

“I’m proud, at the end of the day when you look back, you don’t think about what you won an you lost. I’m proud for having the attitude to serve the club for as long as I was there.

“I have more satisfaction today when I look back at the Emirates Stadium, we built all that without a penny from anybody, and today the club can be more successful.

“I’m proud to have contributed a little bit to improve things. I believe that is the most important thing you can do. When I arrived in England, it was ‘who is this guy?’ and I understood that completely.

“England has created football, why should they employ me? There was no history of success for foreign people, there were only two guys from before working from outside of England and they were not a great success. I’m grateful as well that I got the chance to do that.”
