Arsene Wenger sends message to Thierry Henry as Arsenal legend set for Bournemouth job

Arsene Wenger has backed Thierry Henry to make an impression at Bournemouth if he is successful in securing the position at the Championship club.

Arsenal's all-time leading goalscorer is reportedly set to leave his current position with Montreal Impact to take a job on the south coast, marking his return to English football.

Henry appears to have beaten competition from former Arsenal teammate Patrick Vieira in the running for the Cherries vacancy, which has been available for the past two weeks since the sacking of Jason Tindall.

Wenger, the man who brought Henry to English football from Juventus and oversaw his entire career in north London, has now spoken ahead of the new role for his protégé.

"I knew a little bit that Patrick Vieira was in the frame but Thierry Henry – because he was in Montreal – I did not expect him to leave but it’s a good club Bournemouth," he told BeIN Sports.

"I think it’s a good test as well for somebody. They have good players, they work well. I think it’s a great platform for a young manager that he can do it in England and then to go to the Premier League."

Wenger was then asked if being a world-class player means someone has the capability of being a successful manager and added: "You don’t know because basically all the players that play at the top they can be managers.

"To play at the top top you need to understand football and then after it’s about dedication and whether you want to live this life or not you know. You don’t know that when you manage them."

Bournemouth are currently sixth in the Championship table and lie eight points behind the automatic promotion positions.
