Arsene Wenger sends message to Marcelo Bielsa after Leeds vs Villa controversy

Mad-cap Marcelo Bielsa has been thanked by legendary former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger for restoring his faith in football.

Leeds boss Bielsa's act of sportsmanship in in Sunday's game with Aston Villa means the Championship's automatic promotion race won't go down to the last day.

Sheffield United are up as Leeds failed to win - and after allowing a 'walk-in' goal, Bielsa has been praised.

Mateusz Klich put them ahead after 73 minutes but Villa players were livid as Jonathan Kodjia was floored injured.

He let them level straight away - and even Wenger was impressed.

What Dean Smith said to Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa over controversial Aston Villa goal

The Frenchman told beIN Sports lesson should be learned from his behaviour - despite of course Beisla being at the centre of the Spygate scandal earlier this season.

Wenger said: "I would like to say thank you to the manager of Leeds, Marcelo Beisla.

"It's a remarkable gesture. They are playing to come up to the Premier League and there is something at stake. It's totally remarkable and the whole world has to watch that.

"The second thing is to remind the rules that the players should not stop if there is no head injury. Only the referee can stop the game. Aston Villa should not have stopped to play.

"Leeds took advantage of it and that is where they were guility.

"It is a kind of fair play that is usually on the football pitch. Only the ref can stop the game but it's remarkable from Marcelo Bielsa."

On Leeds’ contentious goal, Smith added: “Klich has apologised. Every credit to Leeds and Marcelo Bielsa for putting that right.

“I asked him and he agreed. He said ‘yes’. He apologised for what happened. Fair play to them. It was a good game of football until that moment.”

His opposite number Bielsa said: “We gave the goal back. The facts are what everyone saw.

“English football is known for sportsmanship so I don’t have to comment on this kind of thing, which is common in England.”

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder also praised the Argentinian for the decision which ultimately secured promotion.

He says that Bielsa deserves "full respect" for what he did.

"I've got to say full respect to Marcelo Bielsa in terms of the way he handled today. I think it was right, correct and proper," said Wilder.

"Watching the game today, absolutely 100 per cent credit to Marcelo Bielsa."
