Arsene Wenger proved right about Alexis Sanchez as surprise transfer talks are revealed

Former Arsenal forward Alexis Sanchez could be on the move once again.

The Chile international was a popular figure at the Emirates Stadium prior to joining Premier League rivals Manchester United in the 2018 January transfer window.

In return, the Gunners got Henrikh Mkhitaryan as part of the swap deal taking Sanchez to Old Trafford, although neither club got the better end of this particular transfer.

After a loan spell at AS Roma, the former joined the Serie A side on a permanent basis from Arsenal last summer, while Alexis also made a permanent move to Italy, signing for Inter Milan.

And the pair could soon become teammates at the Stadio Olimpico.

That's according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, who has revealed that Inter are in discussions with Roma over a potential swap deal that would see ex-Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko move in the opposite direction.

With just two goals to his name in 19 appearances so far this season, it's clear that Sanchez still hasn't rediscovered the form that made him one of the best players in Europe whilst at Arsenal.

Now amid talk of a surprise move to Roma, Arsene Wenger has been proved right about Sanchez's loss of confidence that has affected his form over the past three years.

"It is the question he has raised with his performances," Wenger told beIN Sports in 2018. "I believe he has lost confidence.

"The strength of Alexis Sanchez is to take initiative to dribble, to take people on.

"They as well these kinds of players who are most vulnerable when they have no confidence any more, because their game is based on confidence and feeling free to take initiative, he has lost that slowly, even with the interruption of the season.

"Since the start of the season he had a high level of physical energy, but he has lost [that] as well."

Meanwhile, Sanchez's manager at Inter Milan in Antonio Conte has put the forward's struggles down to ongoing fitness issues.

"I don't know if it's a problem for the national team or the player," Conte told a news conference last month. "But the constant fact is that Sanchez is often injured."

Given that Mkhitaryan has flourished at Roma, it could also be the perfect move for Alexis as he looks to find his old Arsenal form.
