Arsene Wenger proposes offside rule change to make Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham fans happy

Arsene Wenger is spearheading proposals to change the offside rule.

The former Arsenal boss, now head of football development at FIFA, is at the forefront of plans to give the advantage back to the attackers in a new change to the offside rule, set to be trialled soon.

Wenger's role at FIFA led to him being handed a role on the panel of the International Football Association Board, which governs the laws of the game and any rule changes.

And as a result the Frenchman has put forward plans to change the offside rule.

With VAR involved, the offside rule currently states that no part of your body with which you can score from can be ahead of the last defender and VAR has often been criticised for drawing lines onto the pitch to find out by the exact millimetre if a player is in an offside position or not.

Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker has been outspoken on the laws as they are, with VAR getting involved saying: "Level is no longer onside", "It's utterly ridiculous" and "It's actually changed the sport and certainly not for the better".

Under Wenger's proposals, however, an attacker is onside if any part of their body that they can play the ball with is in-line with the second-last defender.

The Premier League have played a part in convincing IFAB to trial the changes.

Infantino, president of FIFA since 2016, revealed the key role that Wenger played in the creation of the new law.

"We have been seeing that maybe we can think about a new law which allows a bit more attack in football," said Infantino.

"Arsene Wenger presented it to us this morning. Our role at IFAB is making football more attractive without changing its nature. We have seen, maybe, a new law which allows a bit more attack."
