Arsene Wenger praises Fred for role in Manchester United win vs Atalanta

Cristiano Ronaldo was the man of the hour once again as Manchester United produced another iconic European fightback under the lights at Old Trafford.

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner nodded home nine minutes from time against Atalanta — giving United a 3-2 win after earlier goals from Marcus Rashford and Harry Maguire.

Rashford was one of three changes made by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for the Champions League clash.

Indeed, the returning England forward was handed his first start of the season after shoulder surgery, as Scott McTominay and Fred were reunited in the engine room.

That combination has often been a source of frustration for United supporters this season, with pundits also wading in to criticise the pair.

Speaking on Monday Night Football, pundit and former Old Trafford favourite Gary Neville claimed that Solskjaer 'could not go back' to the duo amid recent performances.

However, the Norwegian manager reverted to Plan A against Serie A opponents — and the role played by Fred has been pinpointed as a platform which helped United spark up their dramatic victory, with former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger praising the Brazilian.

Speaking to beIN Sports, Wenger said: "I would personally highlight the second half of Fred. Fred saved a few crosses in the box. Defensively he was outstanding and he worked unbelievably hard in the second half."

Wenger added: "The changes made a difference, [Paul] Pogba I thought did well.

"Pogba gave them more power out from deep in midfield by creating more dangerous balls.

"And when Pogba came on [Bruno] Fernandes became better.

"Fernandes had a poor first half but in the second half he came alive as well."
