Arsene Wenger pinpoints the key qualities Olivier Giroud offers Frank Lampard and Chelsea

Arsene Wenger has singled out Olivier Giroud for special praise after the Chelsea striker's strong start to the season.

The 34-year-old scored all four goals in his side's Champions League victory over Sevilla in midweek, showing he can still be a crucial member of Frank Lampard's side despite the summer arrival of Timo Werner and Tammy Abraham's good form when called upon.

Wenger, who signed Giroud for Arsenal from Montpellier in 2012, hailed his compatriot's mentality and insisted that he can still provide an attacking threat for the Blues when given the chance.

"I said that many times as well [as in the Premier League] in the French national team there is always a debate about him," Wenger told CBS Sports.

"But Olivier Giroud has - apart from his footballing qualities - he has an absolutely strong mentality and strong motivational level and has qualities that nobody else has.

"He can always be a resource inside a club even when he doesn't start the game and has an immaculate mentality.

"He is a real team player what is not always the case for strikers and overall I think he is an exceptional personality. And that's why every time you think he's disappeared, he bounces back.

"There's no coincidence, he has over 100 caps for France. Nobody gives you 100 caps to please you."

Giroud has never really been considered as one of the game's top attacking talents, but has enjoyed a decorated career which has seen him lift the FIFA World Cup, France's Ligue 1 title and the FA Cup, the latter on four occasions.

He scored 105 goals in 203 matches for Arsenal during a five-and-a-half year spell at the club before joining Chelsea in January 2018.

The Frenchman is two games away from making his 100th appearance for the Blues.
