Arsene Wenger pinpoints reason for PSG 'collapse' in Man City defeat

Manchester City are in pole position to reach their first Champions League final, but an away-goal advantage was only presented to them by 'stupid' Paris Saint-Germain.

That's the damning assessment from former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger after Pep Guardiola's side hit back to snatch a 2-1 victory in France on Wednesday night.

After controlling the first half, PSG - beaten in last season's final - took a 1-0 lead into the break. That came after Marquinhos had put them ahead on 15 minutes with a glancing header.

However, upon the restart, City grabbed the semi-final tie by the scruff of the neck and turned things around with quick-fire goals from Kevin De Bruyne and Riyad Mahrez, before Idrissa Gueye promptly saw red for a bad challenge on Ilkay Gundogan.

With a place in the Istanbul showpiece at stake, the sides meet again at the Etihad Stadium next Tuesday.

It's advantage City as PSG danger men Kylian Mbappe and Neymar Jnr prepare to visit Manchester - but it ought to have been a totally different story, according to Wenger.

Speaking to beIN SPORTS, the Frenchman said: "I must say in the second half PSG were protective and not progressive any more. Is it because they were not physically capable?

"After 1-1, they collapsed completely. They become emotional and aggressive in a stupid way."

Wenger added: "What was interesting is that you could see that when it was 1-1, PSG mentally collapsed. This is the consequence of a team losing eight games in the league. This has an impact.

"When it's 1-1 the team knows they have lost many games, they carry that. It's not like the season before when they were unbeatable in the league.

"You could see the confidence dropped considerably and the mental impact when Man City equalised, for the semi-final of a Champions League, was too big."
