Arsene Wenger outlines what Arsenal need to reach Liverpool’s level

Arsene Wenger has called on the Arsenal to ‘buy the right players’ are questioning the successes of the club’s spending since his departure in 2018.

Wenger stood down as Arsenal manager after 22-years in charge two summers ago, and was replaced by Unai Emery with the Spaniard lasting just 18 months in the role.

The Gunners are set to name Mikel Arteta, one of Wenger’s former captains, as their next manager despite having no previous experience as a No1.

Arteta has been Pep Guardiola’s assistant manager at Manchester City for the past three years, and Wenger insists that while experience is important, it all comes down to successful player recruitement.

“When I left the club it was in a very strong financial position and they bought many players in between,” Wenger said, speaking at an event in Doha ahead of the Club World Cup Final.

“They haven't all worked out, but it's not a question of time. The change can be very efficient and happen quickly.

“It's just about the right decisions and making those and that's what it's about in football basically. It's about good players.”

“We speak about Liverpool, the success of Liverpool," he continued. “Of course they have a great manager but you have to say as well that Liverpool in the last three or four years, they bought the right players.”
