Arsene Wenger opens up on the temptation of becoming Newcastle United boss

Arsene Wenger has said that he considered applying the vacant Newcastle United manager's role, but won't say that he's not yet ready to return to the game.

The Arsenal legend has been out of work since leaving the Gunners in May 2018 following 22 years with the club.

The role at St James' Park is available following the news that Rafael Benitez will leave at the end of his contract, and has seen several high profile managers linked with the role.

However speaking to France 24 , the 69-year-old says that he's enjoying his time away from the game and while he's open to opportunities, Wenger won't rush his return.

Asked if he'd consider the Newcastle role, he said:"Not in the near future, no. I still am not ready to go back.

"I thought 'yes' but I don't think at the moment I will come back.

"I am more open now than a year ago to talk about that but I cannot tell you that in the next two or three days I will go into management again.

"I took a little bit of distance and I enjoyed it. I worked for 35 years without any interruption so I think I deserved a little rest."
