Arsene Wenger on Mikel Arteta becoming Arsenal manager: I will support him

Former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger says he will throw his support behind Mikel Arteta, should the Spaniard become the new Gunners boss.

Standard Sport understands that Arteta will be named as Unai Emery’s successor in the coming days, possibly even in time for this weekend’s trip to Goodison Park to face his former side Everton.

It was Wenger that first brought Arteta to north London when he signed him from Everton in 2011, and he went on to make him his club captain.

The pair one two FA Cups together during their time at the Emirates, and Wenger says he will back his former player all the way.

"Look I am an Arsenal supporter – I said that in my last speech,” Wenger said. “At the moment I support the manager in charge, and the manager in charge is [Freddie] Ljungberg. When Arteta will be in charge, I will support Arteta.

"Of course Arsenal is going through a very difficult period so it’s better I don’t comment too much on that and I just suffer like every supporter."
