Arsène Wenger has said he believes that Jamie Vardy is likely to remain at Leicester City despite Arsenal having activated the release clause in the England striker’s contract.

In an interview with Chinese television, the Arsenal manager said: “Jamie Vardy is, at the moment, at Leicester and from what I know, he will stay at Leicester.”

Arsenal activated the release clause at the beginning of June and have been looking to secure a deal for the forward worth around £20m.

Vardy, for his part, continues to focus only on England until after Euro 2016. “There is only one thing I want to do here and that is play football to the best of my ability,” he said. “If I let things start distracting me, I’m not going to be able to do that, which will jeopardise the team as well. So everything has been completely blanked out except for England, England, England.”

Leicester are reported to be increasingly confident that their leading goalscorer will decide to remain with them.

Vardy again proved his worth when he came off the bench at half-time to score England’s first goal in their 2-1 victory against Wales in Lens in their second game at Euro 2016.
