Arsene Wenger issues support to Mikel Arteta as Ian Wright voices big Arsenal concern

Here is your Arsenal morning digest on Sunday, December 6.

Wenger praises Arteta

Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes Mikel Arteta can still be successful at the club despite their poor start to the season.

The Gunners are currently 14th in the Premier League going into this evening's north London derby, but Wenger has backed the current manager.

"I don't believe in patience in football, you know, you have three months to have an impact when you arrive somewhere," Wenger continued. "And if I look at my clubs everywhere I arrived, it didn't take me three years to have an influence.

"I think [ Arteta has had that influence]. But I am not at the club. After it's the way the team plays and the games you win or you lose, you know, it's simple. It's about results. It's as simple as that."

Robinson backs Arteta

Former Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson believes Arsenal should follow Liverpool's example with Jurgen Klopp when it comes to Arteta.

The Reds won the Champions League and Premier League in back-to-back seasons under Klopp in 2018/19 and 2020/21 respectively despite somewhat of a slow start from the German boss at Anfield.

"I really rate Arteta; I think he's one of the brightest managers in world football," Robinson said, speaking exclusively to Ladbrokes at its launch of the 5-A-Side Bet on Tottenham v Arsenal.

"Getting rid of him just because they're in a poor run of form would absolutely be the wrong thing to do. Look at Jose Mourinho at Tottenham; he's in his second year and that project is taking time. It took Jurgen Klopp four years to win a trophy at Liverpool."

Wright reveals big Xhaka concern

Arsenal legend Ian Wright has revealed that Granit Xhaka's negative style of play in recent weeks has almost made him 'burst into tears'.

The Gunners have lost four out of their last six Premier League games and Wright has pinpointed Xhaka's style of play as a big concern for Arteta.

The ex-Arsenal striker said on the Kelly & Wrighty Show: "I think Xhaka at the moment has kind of reverted to type, it’s very negative, this is why we’re getting this stat of 58 passes per shot. We’re passing [too much].

“If you’re not taking chances, you’re not going to create anything. I think one of the stats the other day was the most interaction between two Arsenal players was Xhaka back to Gabriel – it nearly made me burst into tears!"
