Arsene Wenger has issued his assessment on Thomas Tuchel's decision to sub off Callum Hudson-Odoi just 30 minutes after his introduction off the bench at Southampton.
The England international was introduced at half-time but struggled to establish a foothold in the game, leading to Hakim Ziyech coming on in his place at the 76th minute mark.
After the match, Tuchel confirmed the decision was not due to injury and stated that he was disappointed by Hudson-Odoi's commitment in the match.
That has quickly become the major talking point of the clash against Southampton, where a 1-1 draw dented the Blues' top-four aspirations, and former Arsenal boss Wenger has given his assessment on the situation.
Wenger has himself been in this situation before in his career, having substituted Emmanuel Eboue during Arsenal's 1-0 victory against Wigan Athletic in 2008 following a woeful cameo from the Ivorian.
While Wenger admits that it could have a negative effect on the player's confidence, he identified that Hudson-Odoi didn't offer much in the match following his introduction.
"I've done it before, once in my life, but really it was because I was scared to lose the game because the guy was completely lost," he told beIN Sports.
"We said at half-time, where would [Callum] Hudson-Odoi play? Basically he played in what we call a Christmas tree, in that position behind the central striker which became [Timo] Werner in the second half. He never found the right position there.
"I see him more in a wide position and he was not in the game. Was it the guy to take off? He didn't do a lot of positives and he did not do a lot of negatives."
